First attempt at HDR

12 years 3 days ago #226698 by mattmoran
I had the opportunity to make some pictures in a restored theatre recently. The lighting was pretty challenging, so I bracketed a lot and decided to try out some HDR.

So this is my first attempt. (There are a few others in the same album, but I'm only posting one here.) Please let me know what you think. If it looks garish and wrong, please don't hold back.

Thanks!

Nice, you got a lot more range out of this than any single shot could for sure. And the best part is that your HDR doesn't look like some sort of cartoon effect, it just looks like something close to what your eye could see instead of the limited range your camera could capture.

The only thing I might work on is that the shadows are still a bit on the dark side, particularly near the bottom. And perhaps some detail in the hanging light is lost.

I sometimes do "faux" HDR work in Photoshop on images like this -- I'd place the underexposed image on a layer above what you've already got here, then use a combination of masking, blending modes and opacity to tweak it to just how I want it. For me, HDR is a tool best used for getting even-looking exposure throughout the image.

Thanks for your comments. I'm really not a fan of the exaggerated HDR effect. I should have bracketted a wider range. This was from 3 pictures, a stop apart, and the middle was underexposed. (if I remember correctly that is)

Next photoshoot I'll get a wider range of exposures and play around more with Photomatix.

I don't have photoshop, just Lightroom and now Photomatix.
