I keep getting mixed focus and soft spots with this new macro lens. I am using centered focus. Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong?

You didn't give much info but I think it maybe a lens issue. What was aperture, and was it auto focus?

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

Looks to me like you are closer than the minimum focus distance or are using a 1;1 filter and aren't close enough

Depth of field is extremely shallow with macro lenses, more so wide open as you were with this shot. Looks as though a portion of the petals are in focus, but not the stamen, thus you are just not the correct distance for the stamen to be in focus (I'm assuming that's what you wanted to be in focus). Is this handheld?...Might be a bit of user movement at play as well...

When you are this close to your subject, you need to stop down as much as your lens will allow to get enough depth of field. Macro's often reach f/32. Of course, this means a tripod, perhaps focusing rails to get sharp focus on the part you want, and a cable release to keep it all from moving.
