Canon EF-S 17-55 F2.8 or Canon EF-S 15-85 f3.5-5.6

Hi I am using 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 from one year with Canon EOS t2i. Sometimes I have to take pictures of kids in mall and in low light have to increase my ISO which gets grainy even at 400. Secondly the portraits at 5.6 are not having good bokeh.
Now I want to upgrade my lens (choice canon 17-55 and canon 15-85) but I am confused that I should go for canon 17-55 with constant aperture f2.8 which i am sure will work fine in low light. But the focal length is too short.

I need lens which I dont not want to remove all the time. Something that can be used generally.

Regards

P.S

Getting 17-55 f2.8 for 740$ (from a friend) and canon 15-85 f3.5-5.6 for 650$

Pick the 2.8 lens as the quality is so much better in the pro level glass. at near maximum apertures.even if you have to "zoom with your feet" , indoors the 2.8 is the choice if you want less grain.

:agree:
I haven't used it myself, but I've heard lots of great things about the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8. A lot of people say the only reason it's not an "L" lens is because it's EF-S (made for smaller sensors only) instead of EF (compatible with both crop and full-frame sensors). But the image quality is said to be "L" level. And the f/2.8 aperture throughout the focal length is definitely your biggest factor for low light.

One other thing comes to mind that might help your low-light shooting. Are you shooting RAW or JPEG? I ask because I used to shoot JPEG with a Canon Rebel series camera, and the noise levels above ISO 400 were just unusable. But after I switched to RAW I did a comparison test, shooting the exact same shot RAW and JPEG at ISO 400, 800 and 1600. I found that the noise problem wasn't even a big factor with that camera when shooting RAW. I was able get usable shots even at 1600.

Thank you seniors for your valuable feedback. Yes I shoot in JPEG. Actually in RAW I have to convert images later which takes time.

So for time saving I take pictures mostly in JPEG.

Someday I'd like to replace my old 28-135 with the 15-85, but I shoot in RAW. For f/2.8 and faster primes are more attractive to me than zooms. Different strokes for different folks, they all work.

I would really encourage you to switch to RAW. That's better advice than any lens suggestion I could give you. I know there's a little extra time involved, but it truly is worth it.
