Which one?

Mussolini took the 16th century residence of the Venetian ambassador to the Vatican as his residence. It is now partially open to the public. From the spectacular courtyard. Which image works better? Comments welcome!

G'day John

You ask for comments ... sorry mate - neither grabs me :(
Q- are you showing us the large tree? or the building?

If it is the building - as I suspect you intend - then maybe a horizontal view would be better - and even then maybe concentrate on either side of the building with the tree framing one edge

Insofar as colour vs mono - the colour has the edge to my eyes

Hope this helps

It's the tree, Phil. And, thanks for commenting

If your subject is the tree (trees?), then the color version. I'm never a fan of B&W with tons of texture that overwhelms the image (and the eye).

Honestly, though, I don't get "spectacular" from either of these. But I generally find images (such as these) of trees to be uninteresting (and I've seen plenty of them in portfolios) so it's probably just me.

"Spectacular" referred to the courtyard, not the tree(s) or my image of them. Thanks for commenting

For me, the first....

Why so serious?

None for me.
What ever the historical information, the picture
tells in itself no story nor inspire viewing pleasure.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

The details are just too much for both shots. it is looking too much for me.

Thanks. Do you mean too much contrast? Would you elaborate?

I think she is referring to the sharpness of the details of the shot. The contrast is fine with me.

Thank you. I don't think I oversharpened. Perhaps it is the subject.

But this could have been a really good shot though. Nice exterior.
