Bad Moon on the rise...

12 years 7 months ago #141409 by chasrich
I saw the most fantastic moon last night on my way home. Only one day after a full moon it was still ripe and full and hanging low on the horizon. If I had had my camera I would have stopped on the spot to shoot it. By the time I got close to the camera the moon was higher in the sky and the lusty red glow it had earlier had blanched out to the usual white colors. So I plotted and planned to go tonight and see if that same bad moon would rise again... It did! :woohoo:

The original had a airplane trail in it. I can't decide if it adds or subtracts from the shot.

White balance was set to cloudy. Auto did not catch the red colors the moon really had.

I like the mistake -- the airplane trail in it. Happy accident. :)

LOL I should read more. I thought it was a fishing pole.

Actually I did shoot RAW tonight. The camera was taking forever to record the data. Does it take longer to record RAW when the exposure is long - that doesn't seem right but maybe?

No. The exposures are the same.

In fact a JPEG is RAW to start with, and then processed by the camera. It's quicker to write to the card, 'cause its been made smaller.

That's what I understood... still the thing seemed to crawl for me.

Maybe get a faster card? RAW shouldn't make much difference (if any).

What we think is bright and what meter sees as bright are very different. Our eyes adjust quickly to light level changes. Film and sensors need to be given as much light as they require. They don't adjust.

What did you think of Jay Meisel's color work?

 Both great, Charles. They write songs about the red moon where I came from...! The contrail would add interest, but it's hard to tell that's what it is, I, too, thought it was a rod... And the reflection looks a bit cooked. I'll take the first one, and hang it on the wall!:judge:

Great shots, we have some fantastic views of the moon over here in Western Australia especially as it comes up over the horizon, you have inspired me to get out there more and shoot that moon !

Really like the colors and the reflection. The contrail I thought was a utility line, now that I know what it is I like it but the white dots of lights throws me off a bit.

Prefer it without the trail I find that distracting, its an amazing moon shot, well done :judge: :judge: :judge:
