Harbor scene...

Sea World has dozens of these scenic backgrounds for tourists to use. Most of them stand alone as potentially good shots. Locals look at these places and don't see anything even interesting. When I visit places like this I try to mix my perspectives to include seeing what is fresh and bright to others. I'm remembering Ansel Adams who said "There are always two people in every photograph, the photographer and the viewer.

Some questions to ask yourself...

1. What is my subject?
2. What are the supporting elements within the frame?
3. What (if any) are the distractions?

That's true for a person or a landscape. Something has to be the THING. The rest in the frame is there to add to it.

Make #1 obvious, keep #2 simple and avoid #3 (move or crop in camera to omit them).

HTH :)

This is fantastic, and proof that a great shot can be had even when shooting directly into the sun.

Charles 1st and foremost good point.... 2nd great capture..... I also was at Seaworld earlier this year and was actually at this same spot. When capturing the image I said to myself the same thing, "how can I interpret this scene differently than how others before me have?" I decided to bracket my captures so I have the ability to edit it in HDR. Here is my final print with HDR editing and cropping... please comment and critique.

Great advice and exactly what I would have said. Eliminate everything that's not needed after you decide what the subject is. Simplify, simplify, simplify.

I would say that too, Shadow!

Photography is easy. Look how many total n00bs take great pictures. It isn't hard at all to take a pretty photograph. Just stand in front of something pretty (or find a flower).

Simple.

What makes someone a photographer is how they feel about their work, and how they present it to others. They have to give it importance in their mind, before someone else will.

:)

Personally I don;t think HDR has done anything here. A little boost in saturation would have done. Still each to their I suppose. Oh and HDR is suppose to increase dynamic range, not blow out the highlights... :pinch: :P

Sn thanks for you opinion. That's the reason why we as photographers do what we do... to have the freedom and ability to express images the way we want to. Just like the saying "someones junk is someones else's treasure" goes the same towards photography or any other form of artistic expression.
