It takes a tripod (or a very steady hand), a good subject and it looks like he played with the colors a bit in post.

Interesting, Matthew. At a recent "open judging" contest here, one of the judges began explaining how the photo was taken and how it could have been better. The maker of the image was furious since the assumption that the judge had made was DEAD WRONG. Tis better to ask the maker how the image was created than to presume one knows the facts. I don't think that judge will be asked back next year. Just sayin'.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I could be wrong. No doubt.

But that is how it looks to me. A wide lens, a tripod, good DoF, about a 1/15th shutter speed and some HDR-like post work.

Wonder if I'll be asked back next year? ;)

Could be an ND. Or maybe a polarizer to deepen the sky. But again, I think the colors are tweaked a bit in post (and maybe in camera too -- like a VIVID color setting). The colors look real, but not naturally real. More like Velvia's colors.

Hope "o" comes back and let's us know what techniques (and tools) he used.

:)
