Graveyard - Jesus Praying...

12 years 5 months ago #167363 by Joiemagic
Needed a Graveyard photo for the weekly photo contest I enter, so went to the cemetary to visit my deceased family and get some photos. In the background, you can see the headstone of my Great-Grandparents. I submitted the B&W version to the contest. Do you think I made the right choice?

Feel free to comment...

Yes, the black and whites suits the monochromatic nature of the statue more. However it feels like you should have moved the framing down and to the right a little more (I know you were trying to get your great-grandparents grave in the shot, but still...). Also it looks a tad tilted...

...for this shot I would have tried to get as high an angle as possible to get a sense that the statue is looking towards the camera (I would have a least tried to get that sort of shot).

IMHO what makes a photo stand out (assuming the exposure is correct) is:

1. lighting
2. angles
3. framing

In this case your lighting is fine, the angles and framing could do with some work.

Overall it's a pretty good photo, just not great. I think you can do better (I've seen you do better). Keep at it though, you're progressing very fast. :)

I like the idea of getting higher up... will have to go back and try that...

As for the slight angle... I thought so too at first.... but when I bring up a grid on the photo... while there are a few headstones that are have a slight lean (right side)... the primary one that I was focusing on (great grandparents) is straight as can be... Maybe I could have cropped in a bit to eliminate the angled stones...

Good idea.

I'm just being a bit harsh on this photo as I known you're the type who wants to learn. It's a good photo overall. :)

Don't worry I do exactly the same thing to my own photos (criticize them) it's good to help you grow :D
