In your edit it is still skew. In this case use the horizon to get your bearings. As far as cropping goes I love big skies so I would emphasize that instead of the sand. I would also put the sun in the centre. Again, that's my thing, some people like stuff off-centre. Also lightening the shadows of the beach would be good too. More like this:
