Advice for buying a macro lens

12 years 10 months ago #117982 by hillcl
I own a Nikon D40 and have the kit lens of 55-200, a 18-55, and recently purchased the 55-300. I love to take close-ups and macro shots. The 55-300 is great but I often have to back up so the camera will take the picture. I would really like to purchase a good macro lens without mortgaging my house. Any ideas?

The Nikon micro lenses are expensive and you would lose AF with the older ones you could find used. I have a 100mm Promaster Macro lens that works very well. I would suggest a Tokina, Tamron or Sigma lens if you want to go with a major manufacturer

This is Nikon's full line up of macros (note they label them micro-Nikkor):

The 40mm is new and not too expensive. Would be like a 60mm macro in film photography.

The almost new 85mm f/3.5 would be another good choice.

What is your budget? Unless we know that, it's kinda hard to really give you suggestions....

I'd like to keep it between $500 and $800.

A Tamron 90 can be had for 300 to 400 dollars from KEH. Take a look at Nikon 60 micro. Very sharp lens.

I agree. With the 60Micro you need the AF-S or you can manually focus with the older AF lenses. There is a trick with the bodies without motors to focus without installing a focus screen. You focus till the Green Dot shows in the View Finder. That actually works with all Nikon Dslrs.
