What lens do I need to get better pictures of flowers? I'm using a Nikon D50.

Are you talking about normal everyday pictures? because any lens will do just fine, the kit lens you currently have will work. Or are you talking about close up/macro pictures?

OK so a macro lens is what you need. Nikon macro lenses can be a bit pricey, so you could buy Sigma 105mm macro lens for around $400.

Wow, $400. I don't have that kind of money to spend on a lens. Is there a cheaper way?

You could buy a 50mm for about $100 and buy an adapter to reverse the lens to shoot macro.

Most of us will agree with you but I don`t like shooting flowers with a macro because you need a small aperture to get everything in focus. My personal preference is a 70-300.
Not knocking your excellent reply, just offering another point of view.

There are many ways to get "closer". You can add extension tubes or a close up filter (eg. a close up lens) to your current lens, and/or get a real macro lens. You might find a used lens cheap enough.

As Matthew stated you can get the Extension tubes for your D50 and use your current lens. The Kenkos are great and not that expensive. Also you might try looking at KEH and see what they are getting for the AF Micro lenses, they are less expensive than the AF-S lenses. A link to KEH is at the bottom of the page. Their used lenses are very good and some when you get them look new. But tubes is the least expensive way to go.
