VRII vs VR on the 70-200mm lens

Is the VRII really worth the upgrade? How big of difference is there between these two?

One stop.

To determine the effectiveness of VR you need to first determine the shutter speed you need to remove the effects of any hand moments/vibrations. Normally you'd need a shutter speed of 1 over focal length (this is on a FF/FX body and is a general rule-of-thumb. You need to adjust shutter speed according to any any crop factor your camera might have).

So a 100mm lens (on a Full Frame/35mm/FX camera) needs 1/100 to reduce vibrations from your hands (as a rule-of-thumb).

Now take that 1/100 shutter speed and divide it by 2 for each stop the IS/VR can achieve. That will give you the shutter speed you can (in theory) shoot at and still not have your hand vibrations affecting the image.

So using the 100mm lens on a FF cam as an example:
So for VR (I) which is 3 stops. It's 100÷2÷2÷2= 1/12.5 SS
For VR II it's another stop so it's 100÷2÷2÷2÷2= 1/6.25 SS

Of course shooting this slow doesn't mean the subjects you're shooting will stand still. ;)

But the VRII version is also sharper and IIRC has some other stuff like Nano coating that the older version does' t have.

If you are on DX you should save your money. For FX it's better no question BUT keep in mind that when objects are close it's not a true 200mm lens. It's more like 150mm.

Yeh that's focus breathing. Most lenses do that. This one's is just a little more obvious.

DX needs faster shutter speeds to control hand shake and therefore a better VR system will actually help more.

So I disagree with "borrowlenses" on that point.

Why was I under the impression that the difference was 2 full stops?
