Looking for recommendation for wide angle lenses (Nikon)

8 years 9 months ago #450199 by garyrhook
I have decided to rent a super/wide angle lens from my October road trip. I'll need something for landscape and aerial hot air balloon shots. I may or may not rent an (Nikon) FX body.

So opinions are requested. I don't (necessarily) need fast, I need the best IQ I can afford. And little odd distortion (e.g. mustache). I'm looking for my best bet in the 12-24mm range.  I'd like to hear from personal experience, and would especially like to know if anyone has tried any of the Sigma, Tokina or Tamron wides.

Thanks in advance!

I use the Af 14-24mm f/2.8 and the non-AF 15mm f/3.5.
I apologize for inserting photos in your thread, but I thought you might want some idea of the IQ

This was taken with the 14-24 at 16mm:

And this with the 15mm:

For what it's worth, I think the 14-24 is a great zoom, but that the 15mm gives better contrast.

I'm partial to the 16-35 f/4. I use it on my D700 and D800 and its the best landscape lens I've ever owned. A little distortion at 16mm, easily fixed in acr and the rest of its range is solid. Slight CA in high contrast scenes but I've seen that in every lens I've used to date, Canon and Nikon, and also fixable in acr. Its a lot lighter than the 14-24 f2.8, if I was only  going to do all tripod mounted shots, the 14-24 of course would be my pick.....;)

Why so serious?

I recommend the 14-24mm. Just don't expect to get filters on it. If you plan on doing long exposures and you want ND filters, just go with the 16-35 out of simplicity. Don't bother with a circ pol, just looks off when you are that wide and the sky becomes different colours. I've been very happy with my 14-24mm for landscape and seascapes.
