Best lens for travel portraits with sharp backgrounds

Hi

I'm struggling to get good information on the best type of lens for taking vacation photos of people where there's something in the background/distance that should also be in focus. I have a Sony Alpha 6000; my only lens is the Sony E PX 18-105mm F4. It seemed like the Canon EF-S 10-18mm would be my best bet, but I heard finding the right adapter can be tricky. (I'm happy to live without autofocus if the lens itself is very good.) A 50mm takes too narrow a photo for my purposes; sometimes I'll want to pose someone in front of a landscape. The guy at B&H suggested the Sony 16mm 2.8 (and was down on the Canon 10-18), but it's hard to find enthusiastic reviews; the Canon seems to be much more highly regarded, for not much more money. My budget's closer to $350 than it is to $700+. I'd love a brand recommendation, but I'd also settle for understanding what type of lens is right for me. Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

Mike

You need sufficient light in order to be able to stop down the lens but still not too far as diffraction will raise its ugly head. A smaller sensor camera will give more apparent DOF regardless of the lens used. Be careful with a super wide lens (which will give lots of DOF) as then your subjects will get very small in the frame. You can get in closer, but then you have to be careful of perspective (Things closer will seem larger than they should, like a person's nose). I'd just use a cell phone camera for those type shots myself. Unless you are planning on printing them large.
