Sun damage, really worried

5 years 10 months ago #584265 by Bluefeather2018
I made a stupid decision when the sun was nestled between some clouds and took pictures because I thought it looked really really cool. However after the fact I realized that I could have seriously damaged my camera and/or lens. The photos have some black spots but the test photos I took afterwards have no visible issues. If anyone could help reassure me on this I would be grateful.

You need to take a photo of something else with moderate lighting, and examine that. It's unlikely that your camera is damaged from a few shots of the sun.

Probably not as Gary said... I think a camera left in a hot car might be damaged more from the heat (at least I know it's not good for film and probably not so great either for a sensor or electronics). I'm not sure why you got dark spots but I would imagine the exposure was too long. If you took or take more photos and they're fine then I suppose the sensor is OK.

I think there'd be more of a concern about potential eye damage. I don't know how much/how long someone could/should look directly at the sun. Remember there were warnings last summer for the eclipse? I read at least one account of a woman who has permanently lost vision in both eyes (worse in one eye than the other which has a crescent shaped spot permanently on one retina - apparently she didn't look directly at it all that long but unfortunately also used cheap knockoff glasses that were unsafe for solar viewing).

So I would expect to only be able to look at the sun thru a camera for as long as you could outdoors without a camera. Think about being outside and squinting or shading your eyes, or needing sunglasses, or not being able to even look directly at the sun and you automatically look away. I don't think you can do it looking thru a camera's lens any more than you can just being outside.
