New Sigma lens came in and I have question

12 years 7 months ago #30650 by KenMan
So I read hear about the 85mm lens and how good it was. I saw Sigma referenced a few times so I bought this lens. My question is why does this have to hoods for the lens? One is a larger longer hood and the other is a short one?

What's the purpose, I thought the hood lens is needed to keep un needed light from entering your lens?

That extra hood is the extender for people using APS-C (crop) sensors. It's supposed to make the hood for effective for those users since it is more like a 125-135mm lens on those cameras.

If it's the 85 f/1.4 then you've made a very wise choice - I had a close look at one on the Sigma stand at Photokina last September and (as we were being 'woo'ed' by Sigma in an attempt to get us (the Army) away from Nikon), we all had a play.
On the face of it this lens should be every bit as good as Nikon's older 85mm f/1.4 (which i own)and not far behind the new one (which i've played with)...
My ex-colleagues will be trialling the new Sigma Pro-series lenses this Spring and I'll keep you posted as to what's what.

YEp the sigma 85 1.4 is a winner.

The 50 1.4 is also good, but has more calibration issues (usually an easy fix if you sent it to Sigma).
