macro lens

I would like to get into macro photography. I don't know what type of lens I should buy. but first I was thinking maybe I should rent the lens to see if I would like to shoot macro. I love looking at really good macro shots, but would I really love to shoot macro?

So can anyone recommend a good macro lens for my Nikon D40?

Hey, I have a Nikon D5000. :cheer:
You could buy the Nikkor 85mm macro lens.

Bear in mind that as you get closer to life size images, auto focus & VR become useless. Nikon even ackowledges this in the info sheet packed with the newer lenses. You might be able to save some money by getting an older AF macro lens as it will still meter with your camera even though they have no built in motor for AF functions. I use older manual focus lenses which won't meter either, but that is easily overcome. All of the macros in my gallery were done this way. Oh, & don't be tempted by zoom lenses with a "macro" feature as they are not true macro lenses, just close focusing & can't compare to a true macro lens....

I use a 100mm macro lens that is an older AF on my D90 and it works great

I am using a Sigma 105mm macro lens on Nikon. So if you can't find what you like in Nikon macro lenses, check out sigma.
