Best priced 300mm or 400mm Canon mount lens?

I'm looking for a quality lens. F/3.5 to 5.6 is ok. Not interested in ebay F/8 special

What options are out there, would you buy a older manual focus lens at higher focal lengths as this to save a few bucks?

Canon 7D, 15-85mm, 18-55mm, 70-200mm, 100mm Macro, Sigma 120-300mm, Speedlite 430EX II

I buy used quite a bit at KEH. Im not sure on the Canon lenses price wise but, I imagine for primes of that focal length you are looking at $1K a mm minimum. Im not sure if Canon makes manual focus lenses that will mount on the newer cameras.

Two very good lower priced lenses that fit your question are:

Canon 300mm f/4 (either image stabilized or non IS) .... The IS model averages under $1,000.00 used ... New around $1,300.00 - $1,400.00

The other option is the Canon 400mm f/5.6 IS ..... Also in the $1,000.00 range used. ...... New around $1,300.00 - $1,400.00

Both are excellent lenses and favorites of folks wanting their first "bigger" telephoto prime lens. Both take a teleconvertor well.

I have owned both and loved them (still have my 300mm f/4).

The older FD manual focus lenses won't fit the EOS bodies...Many EOS users get Nikon & other makes of lenses & use them with adapters on their DSLR's I'm sure there may be limitations (other than being manual focus) going this route, but it would be less expensive than buying a current model super tele...
