brand quality

I have just stepped into the digital SLR world with a used Nikon D40.

I figured since Im going to be experimenting with this camera I might as well buy a couple of lenses and filters. (or maybe not ) Needless to say I was looking through all the ebay stuff and was wondering if any of these brands is even worth it.

Bower
Mercury
Crystal Optics

I was thinking about getting an add on wide angle lens and some filters. Would any of these brands be worth it?

Would love to help you, but I am also fairly new to photography. So all I can say is.. buy the best.

Yea but I don't know what the best is.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with any of that junk.

Just use the camera and the lens that you have. It will be much harder to discover the potential of the gear you have, if you add crappy accesories to it.

Those brands are not worth the money...Save up & get true lenses, not these "screw on to your existing lens" accessories

You own a Nikon, so buy Nikon, it makes sense, there are plenty of Nikon products to buy second hand.

True, but Sigma make some fine lenses for Nikon. Namely the 50 1.4 and the 85 1.4. Both IMHO are better (and cheaper) than their nikon counterparts.

Personally I would get the AF-s Nikkor 35mm f1.8 DX for the first prime, and the least expensive, then start looking at a few others later. Because of the 1.5 crop factor on the D40, the 35mm comes in at the equivelant of 52.5mm on a film body which is a "normal" perspective lens. A lot of good photographers consider the normal lens to be a must.

IMHO, Focus on getting skills first, learn the camera settings, get a tripod, get a flash, and then get the next lens after you get some experience and you will save yourself a little money by waiting until you know what you need for your style of photography.

Well if you are looking at those because of price, then the reason they are cheap is they are inferiror on quality. With that said there are some adequate copies of those but it is so hit and miss it is like winning the lottery to get a good one. You could go to say KEH and look to the used side of things to save money. Their Bargain lenses BGNs are very clean and actually look like some peoples Goods or Excellents. I have never got a bad lens from them. www.keh.com/
