only one number?

Ive been looking at different telephoto lenses lately and I see one confusing problem..as I usually do with just about everything. I was looking and most telephoto lenses have two maximum apertures, one at the lowest zoom distance and one at the longest zoom distance. Some, though, only have one aperture value. What does this mean? Can the lens somehow maintain this value throughout all the zoom? Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes, they are called constant aperture lenses, and as a rule, they are more expensive, but are better, because they always have that aperture!

and from what I've heard... they are usually longer and heavier and the front of the lens is wide to fit the large aperture in there

The variable aperture lenses are less expensive because they are easirer to manufacture. While yes the paerture changes they can be made lighter with smaller lens elements. The fixed require larger glass internally and will be heavier as was said. The price reflects that and since the aperture is fixed it shoots at lower light better hence the hefty price to go with the size. Which is also why long primes are more expensive than zooms that and their Image Quality is better and the are twice the price of the fixed zooms.
