Are filters created equal?

I recently got a Polarizer as a gift from someone and decided to read a little about them. I never even thought about the fact that all polarizers weren't created equal and since mine was $20 i am pretty sure it's not all that great. Now i am curious though, are all UV filters created equal or do i need to get different ones?

The price gives you a good indication of the quality of glass and accuracy of manufacture. It makes no sense to spend hunfreds, or more, on the lens, and put something in front of it that will harm the quality of your images. Stick to brand names, without going crazy with price.

No they arent created equal. In the lower end they can have different color cast and uneven colors. They generally use plastic as opposed to optical glass. UVs I dont even touch they arent needed anymore. I use Clears as lens protection.

You don't have to buy the most expensive filters, but don't go with the cheapest either. Hoya makes good quality, glass filters that are usually not laminated, and they have a wide range of prices.

You get what you pay for, the extra coatings on the more expensive filters tend to be what your paying for. As said earlier I wouldn't consider putting a cheap piece of glass in front of an expensive lens...
