Macro filters

12 years 11 months ago #74853 by fotozone
I know nothing takes the place of a macro lens but $$$$$ keep that from being an option for now. I can not even afford a used manual lens. So here is my question what brand of filter do you recommend? I recently got a "FOTGA Close-Up +10 filter" to play with it was only about 7 dollars and I have had some reasonable success. Now I am looking for a decent filter.

Look for a used set of extension tubes instead -- Kenkos are fine.

Thanks I had looked at extension tubes but got overwhelmed and decided there was not any that worked with the D3100.

You may have to go Manual, but as long as they have a Nikon mount, you're good to go.

Tubes let you get much, much closer without adding extra glass.

They all will work, they just will have limitations that you have to overcome. I shoot with a Nikon D70s & like your camera, it won't meter with the older MF lenses & other gear I use from my film days...It's easy enough to overcome though by using your LCD & Histogram to fine tune exposure. Since most macro shooting doesn't involve fast action or rapidly changing light, it is an eay workaround for no metering. All of the macro shots of mine are with manual focus & metering. I do however, use additional lighting to allow me to stop down for additional DOF...Your camera can mount & use even the oldest pre-Ai lenses without fear of damaging the camera (I can't use Pre-Ai on mine. I moderate a group on Flickr where most of the members use Nikons like yours .
