Softbox comparison, does it really make a difference?

I have been searching the web looking at different softboxes. I would like to get a couple rectangle ones and a couple square ones. I have been really focusing on getting into area's of photography that will allow me to earn some bucks. So wedding and portrait work is something I've been working on. Hence the need of some new lighting equipment. But where I get confused is there are so many to chose from. Just from threads on this site I have found: Photogenic, Photoflex, Chimera, Multiblitz, Profoto, Denny Manufacturing, and more!

What makes one softbox better than another? I mean it's just a black box with white defuser of some sort? How many different variations could there be to this?

Differences are in the construction (build quality), some have double baffles (diffusion ability) and options (ex. a grid). Otherwise, they do basically the same.

Ok, so assuming they all have double baffles, the results will be nearly the same? LOL just depending on how long you want the equipment to last. Thanks for the answer.

You get what you pay for, I have tried the inexpensive ones and regretted after having to take apart a couple times. If you looking for inside studio set up where they will never be taken apart for transportation, then the cheap ones will do OK. Other wise I would just recommend make a investment and have piece of mind.

Hi, "Number 7"! We have Softboxes that are economical and great quality. Our Softboxes open and close like an umbrella which is quick and easy! There are not rods to mess with which can be time consuming and frustrating! Below is a link to view a video which was shot by Ron Kramer showing how easy it was for him to assemble his 4'x6' Softbox straight out of the box!

Let me know if you have any questions. Here is another link which will take you directly to the Softboxes on our website:

Have a great day! :)

I think it does matter. There are many good softbox makers. Santa's bringing me a couple new Photoflex softboxes this year for Christmas
