Lighting on a budget

12 years 2 months ago #197815 by Paul F
I was shooting wildlife, but I now would like to get into shooting portraits, but don't have the money for a good lighting kit, so can someone point me in the right direction for a cheap flash and anything else I may need at this time.

As far as an inexpensive flash and you will probably need a remote trigger, eBay would be a good source. Some of the better web sites, like FlashZebra.com are also an excellent source for information and product ideas.

Thanks. Man, I haven't been on ebay in years.

SB 400 speedlight is about $120. Unless you buy used, that is the cheapest you'll get for a flash.

Well, since you shoot with Nikon you can always pick up some SB24 or SB25 speedlights. They are pretty damn cheap on craiglist/ebay (I bought a mint SB25 for $50). It will not work TTL but will work in auto and manual. Then all you need are some transmitters (cheap-o ones will run around $60) and you'll be good to go.

Nikon D200
Nikon 50mm f1.8D, Tokina 28-80 f2.8, Nikon 75-300, Sigma 18-200, Nikon SB-600, Nikon SB-25, Promaster triggers

Go to strobist.com. Look through the "Lighting 101" archive. The whole focus is doing lighting on the cheap.

There is even an article on how to make DYI sync cords with household extension cords.

The lighting 101 series lays out what you need and options.

Never heard of sb24 or sb25. Are they older speedlights?

Yes they are old film body speedlights. I bought it just before picking up my SB600. All you need is a trigger and you should be ready to go.
