Continuous lighting recommendations for food photography

10 years 5 months ago #307989 by DavidM
I'm going to try my luck with food photography (less stress) and was looking for some recommendations on lights. I'm going with continuous lights because of an article that I read some time ago that recommended these. But I can't remember what brand and model they were recommending.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. :thx2:

Color corrections for continuous lights are not fun . . .

I don't do food, but do product work for fellow artisans. I have a really nice set of Profoto strobes that can double as continuous lighting. They allow me to have the same output as a strobe in the modeling feature, so I have a better idea how the shot will look and how to tweak the lighting. Although I am with Kelly, strobes are so much easier to color correct than my continuous lighting set which are really huge CF bulbs. Here is the set I own- Profoto Light Kit . Yes they are quite pricey, but I also do model & portrait work. These allow me to do all I want with ease.

Get yourself a gray card to help you achieve proper white balance in post. This should get your food looking proper, and then you can move on from there to enhance whatever aspects seen appropriate.

For continuous lighting, daylight CFLs might be the least expensive approach, but whatever you use, use the same thing everywhere.

I have a couple studio CFL lights. They were my main continuous light, up until I picked up a LED video light. I have not taken the time to really get into this LED, but my initial impression is that my camera's Auto WB works better with the LED than the CFLs. In any event, I find I am using the CFLs less and less. To flog a dead horse, color corrections for CFL go beyond finding the best WB. Just not fun.

Just wondering what you find difficult about colour correcting CFLs?
