Using a black or white bed sheet for backdrop?

Morning PT.  I'm not exactly made of money and trying to stretch ever dollar I have.  Rather than buying seamless paper and backdrops.  Can I get away with using an ordinary bed sheet for a backdrop?  Will it look any differently in the photos?

A lot can be done with lighting and geometry. If you separate your subject from the background and use a wider aperture, and put your light on the subject and not on the background, you can get away with a lot. Muslin backgrounds are just fabric, after all. You can also darken/lighten and remove detail in post.

The downside of sheets is that they're thin. So you'll want them in front of either thick curtains (using the curtain rod as a support) or a wall. Or hang additional sheets behind to block out light.

In other words, be clever and creative.

I have both, and for smaller items sheets work perfectly.

Use middle gray for background and you can push it to white or black with your settings.

I bought pieces of material by the meter (yard) at sales years ago. White, black, grey.

For some of my smaller subjects, I bought display boards that the kids use in school.  They are three sided and come in a multitude of colors.
