Poduim lighting

We have a large conference room where we often take photos of people speaking at a podium. The current lighting is just overhead fluorescents which look pretty bad. One solution being considered is whether we could use a set of LED band lights (like Chauvet or American DJ) to act as spots to get better photos. Would we also need some kind of floor lights to avoid shadows?

We couldn't set this up just for photos with proper studio lighting, we need more of an event lighting package.

Why not set up a fill light from up and forward facing down at the podium?

At least they could not be any worse than fluorescents.

If the fill lights are set up as directionals and you use something that spills the light out, then you should be good.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what kind of lights would be used for fill lighting. Wide and diffuse?

Yes, you want wide and diffuse. At the very least, two units with leko lenses at 45 degrees to either side, from the ceiling, would help a lot. (Depends upon the height of the room.) Shadows are not bad, you want to control them. And you do not want the additional light level with your subject.

If you're not sure, hire a reputable lighting company. You may need circuitry added, too, where you need it.
