coworker selling light kit...

13 years 2 weeks ago #45298 by QC 89
In another post, I asked about taking toy pictures and someone mention I'll need light. I just found out a friend at work offered to sell me his lighting kit he doesn't use anymore... Could someone offer up some advice on what they think of this? Would I need all these to just take pictures of toys?

Novatron 600VR (Case, Power unit and 3 heads)

1 extra light head

2 white umbrellas

3 head adapters ( snoop, 4 way barndor and a gel holder)

1 sync cable (still in it's bag)

4 retractable light stands

Novatron kits are a decent and inexpensive way to get started. They'll work for things like small portrait setups, table top still life and product photography but they are limited.

Find out what he wants for the kit.

I know nothing about lighting, but if you need lights to take your pictures, then take him up on the deal.

Thanks, sounds like it would be good for what I need. He is asking $400.

That's a good price for all he's offering!
But for occasional product shots, it's a lot of overkill.. You could get by with a couple diffuser screens and some clamp-on lights with 150 watt bulbs.. A shooting tent or shooting table would complete the setup for that seamless background effect..
Here is a good video from ProPhotoLife - it's #2 of a series - to give you some great ideas on cheap DIY lighting..
