Are there such thing as black umbrellas for photography? If there is, what would be the use for them?

A normal photographic umbrella bounces the light back to the subject and is lined in white or silver (some are gold). It basically acts to spread the light out more, which makes it softer. The larger your light source, the softer the light will be, and is why many artists want a Northern facing window. The North sky is one big softbox.

Some "shoot through" umbrellas can be converted to a normal one by adding a black cover to it. What was once translucent now becomes a white reflector.

Anytime you use black (or ANYTHING) to block the light from certain areas of the "set" that's called "flagging" the light. The tools to block light on movie sets are simply referred to as "flags".
