Red Dragonfly

I looked out the window and saw this dragonfly was parked on the antenna of the car well I grabbed my camera and was very happy it was still there when I got out side. I took one photo and it flew off. As I was heading back in the house I looked back and there it was. I would take a couple of shots and it would take off flying around the yard and land back on the antenna as a stood out in the sun camera at the ready.

All were taken with my 70-300 MM lens with the 36&12mm extension tubes attached.

F/20 1/200sec ISO 400 W/ flash Focal length 170mm

F/20 1/200sec ISO 400 W/ flash Focal length 112mm

I have a few more good ones that I will me adding to my albums.

Outstanding. I'm glad it came back for the additional shots. :judge:

Do you think there was a special attraction for that antenna? Some kind of a mistake where the bug sees a attractive lady dragon fly or perhaps it is eating a snack off the top? I ask only because I have seen lots of dragonfly's use this same perch.

I had a similar incident happen with a silver ladybug. Rather than taking over this thread, I started a new one. Look for Silver Ladybug.

Thanks everyone. There are so many amazing photographers here and your complements mean a lot. :)

Charles in this case he was using it as a look out. One of the times he came back to perch he was still chewing, I missed that shot. I just could not get focused in time. :(

A lot of times, when I'm down at the river, I see dragonflies returning to the same place again and again. It is usually a weed or tree branch sticking out of the water. Most of the time, it seems like they're mating because, when another flies by, they go chasing after it, then return to the same spot. Leads me to think maybe they choose these perches because they can see in all directions, while at the same time, remain highly visible to potential mates.

Excellent shots, Lila.
Returning to a perch is pretty common among many species of insects, probably for various reasons. You made good use of it and took some excellent shots. Great job!

Great! I took a couple shots of one last weekend but there was too much background going on to get as clear as this.
