Playing with new macro lens

12 years 9 months ago #118672 by steveheap
After reading the posts and seeing the great macro shots that this group produces, I finally splashed out on my own macro lens and have been playing with it today.

How about this one? Any guesses as to how it was produced?

Cool effects. Looks like the oil was backlit ... was it?

Sure, practice makes perfect but, unless you learn from your mistakes, you are only perfecting your ability to fail.

OK - here is the answer.

I took a clear water glass (with a clean base) and placed on a glass topped table. I had about 1/4 inch of water in the glass. About 12 inches under the glass table was a magazine with a colorful cover. I then put about 5 drops of olive oil in the water, and focused my lens on the surface of the water from above. The flash was used to light the magazine cover and also cast a bit of light into the glass.

The round balls are the circles of oil in the water - they form little lenses. The small drops are much more spherical and you can see the outline of the magazine cover in them on the originals.

Here is another with less light on the surface, I think.

I've got a Canon T1i. I have a Macro 60mm lens. I'm a beginner and self taught. I went outside today to take a picture of a flower with a ladybug on top of it. I did a lousy job. After I loaded them on to my computer I deleted every one of them. I guess I need to use a tripod because they were blurred. Is a tripod necessary for a macro lens? I just want to be able to hold the camera freely and take pictures. I don't like tripods. Any advise? Your talking to a dummy when you reply so speak a dummy language ok? LOL!!! I don't understand a lot of photo terminology.

Get yourself a flash, preferably a ring flash. That way you can shoot macro's without having to resort to using a tripod & can also be able to use a smaller aperture (larger #) for increased depth of field...
