Show Your Bees...

Hi Hussain,
The head is plenty in focus, which is the most important thing. I wouldn't complain. Good work, as usual.
Thanks. :judge:

Hello Tom,

For me if there is no network on the eyes it's out of focus :D

Hi Hussain,
I think that depends on several factors...
Depending on the size of the insect, I've noticed that sometimes it requires going above 2X to see eye facets. You can check by doing a close-crop of the original. And while, like you, I prefer seeing the networking... when shooting live specimens it can be difficult to get every shot we take so "spot on". Don't be too hard on yourself, it's a fine shot.

Thanks again guys,
Let's keep it going... here's another one of mine. A Lasioglossum, which is another small bee around 10mm in length sitting on a yellow flower.

Good going, Scott. Did you take these with a reverse lens?

I really like the little Halictus bee in the second shot, they're among my favorite bees to shoot. Here's one of mine.

Tom,What's your setup in the last shot ?

If you get back for 2-4 mm you will get crazy sharpen :) .I think it's under exposure.

Hi Hussain,
I'll agree it's a bit under exposed. This is one of a series of these bees from 2007, when I first bought my MPE 65mm. I was using a standard flash on a bracket, and sometimes when focused out... the lens blocked the light.

But as for moving 2-4mm, the bee would be totally out of focus. Shooting with an MPE is very similar to shooting with a Reversed Lens, without having to crop. This was taken hand-held at around 4X (Less than .5mm of dof). You can't distinguish the eye facets because they're so tiny and give the impression of being soft. Remember, these are really small bees...

Here's some specs on the MPE you might find interesting:

As you can see, even at f/16 (which is minimum aperture of the lens) the dof is extremely shallow.

And here's another shot:

Thanks!

What's your metering type?

Hi Hussain,
TTL... but when I used the old flash set up, it didn't expand out as the lens focused. When at 5X, and MPE is 8 inches long, and half that when at 1X. Even though I used a softbox on it, the flash head was heavy, and would change position. Now I'm using a macro ring flash.

However,
Beginning last year, I started going through a transitional period in taste. Instead of being so concerned about sharp detail, I've begun shooting more tor feeling. This may sound odd for a macro photographer, so here's an example shot. Hopefully, I'll improve on the technique this season. But I'm finding I enjoy more free space, and less magnification on the bug.

Thanks, hope this makes sense.
