Macro or Close up

I have a question re Macro photography. I've seen a few "macro" photo's of bugs where the whole insect is in the picture, is this not a "close up" and not macro?

From what I understand about macro it's a 1:1 , so surely if you take a photo of a bug or a flower it should be the bugs eye or a part of the bug or part of the flower.

I don't have a macro lens yet and when I did a macro workshop those with macro lenses where taking magnificent 1:1 shots of things that I couldn't do with my 18-200mm lens even if I got as close as possible and cropped the pic as much as I could, the effects weren't the same.

Please can someone clarify for me.

Thanks

This depends on the size of the bug... Some are no more than a few millimeters in length, or less.
You can read about "what is macro" in a previous thread here .

Hope it helps.

On a macro lens it can have 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4...shooting at any of those ratios is still consider macro, it's just they are not as close as 1:1. Close up photos don't give exact detail compare to true macro

Personally, I do not like simply a close up shot of the insect. Might as well look through a microscope. It is the way the picture is being composed. Of course being macro, I am expecting the subject is a small insect, flower and any other items.

Try the Raynox DCR 250. It is not too expensive and produce good result. Just add it to your standard kit lens. A pre-owned is around $100 odd in Singapore.
