Inexpensive setup for macro

I just posted about this in another thread & thought it really needed it's own thread. If you can't afford a true macro lens, you might consider using an older manual focus Vivitar 2X macro converter. What it is is a 2X teleconverter that is also a variable extension tube. Meant to be used with a 50mm lens, it allows you to take photos anywhere from infinity down to 1:1 (life sized). Unlike extension tubes, you don't have to add/remove tubes to change the magnification, you simply turn the focus ring on the converter... I'll try to snap off a shot of mine & add it to this thread tommorrow. Now since it's manual focus, there will be some limitations with using these on DSLR's, what those limitations are depends on the camera make & model, but they can be easily overcome. I have used one on my Nikon D70s. I don't have metering, but shooting macro this isn;t a problem as you can use the LCD/Histogram to achieve proper exposure, or, better yet,use a flash as this will allow you to stop down further from more depth of field
