Vivitar 2X macro teleconverter, Was: Inexpensive macro setup

My previous post didn't get a lot of looks so I redid the title...Here are a couple of quick shots (pardon the crappy shots) of one of my Vivitar 2X macro converters. These are an inexpensive way to get into true macro magnification ranges. Meant to be paired with a 50mm prime lens, you can focus from infinity all the way down to life size....Cost? about $40-50 on eBay or KEH...One shot is the size at closest focus & the second is fully extended to infinity...

Interesting contraption, Scott.
Any idea how many elements it has? Most converters won't extend, so this seems a cross between a converter and tubes. Oh... and is it auto, or manual (manual I presume)?
Thanks!

Tom,
If you auto focus, no, if you mean auto indexing, then yes....Since I shoot Nikon, mine is in the Nikon Ai mount...I'm not sure about the # of elements, but will look into it for an answer for you, and yes, it is a cross between a teleconverter & tubes....I'll have to shoot off some sample pics & post them...It does a pretty good job for what it is. Of course the better the lens you mount it to, the better the results...I have some sample shots taken with it, but am hard pressed to locate them.
