While at the bird sanctuary a few days before Hurricane Sandy hit the area, I caught this shot...

Could have been a good shot but the white on the swan is blown and when viewed full size on Flickr all the birds are out of focus and the shot is a good bit noisy. I'm guessing you were at a good distance and there's a large crop on the pic as your shutter speed seems ok? Like the idea though.

Yes, was a pretty big distance away. Probably about 100 to 150 yards away. And the crop is a lot as well... Thanks

This shot is showing the flaws in your lens (and camera).

I tested the 75-300 a long time ago comparing it to the Canon 70-200 f/4L IS. The L lens you could probably crop like this and it would still look sharp. The 75-300 just dies with this sorta cropping, it doesn't support the detail. Also it seems to produce glowing/chromatic aberrations around the swan.

Also the 400D is a bit long in the tooth now and it seems ISO 400 on it is pretty noisy.

This is a case of the idea of the photo being let down by the equipment used. Maybe turn it into a black and white?!
