Recent nestling Hummer...

A young female, oddly the dominant male that "owns" my feeder sat and watched while this little one fed. Maybe it was a sharing dad?

Why so serious?

2 years now I've been trying to get a photo like that.. What were you shooting with?

the best I can get is similar but with more blur, I need more light!

Great shot.

Great shot.

Thanks...
My setup...Nikon D800, af-s 300 f/4. Natural light. I set up a feeder about twenty feet outside a window where I set my camera on tripod. As season goes by I'll move feeder a few feet closer to the window at a time, the birds get a little used to it and the young ones haven't been wised up yet. Simply, I prefocus and prefer an overcast day. I get a workable file out of every thirty to forty clicks. They go back and forth, I'll try and get a focus when they back up and await the next time and shoot away. Must keep the shutter speed up so I crank the ISO if needed. To freeze wings the speed must be really fast, but I don't mind the blurred shots, as long as the eyes are sharp, you can usually make the photo work....

I did the math once, and figured out that a shutter of 1/4000 (or perhaps 1/8000?) is not fast enough to freeze the wings in mid-flight. The best you can hope for is a sharp body/eyes/beak.

Strobes will help, but IMO the lighting ends up looking horrid. High ISO, fast shutter, and lots of patience. And compromise.
