Does social media impact how you take photos?

7 years 7 months ago #496294 by Glenn Gee
I just read an article ( time.com/4470342/vertical-image-shift/ ) about how social media, specifically Snapchat, is causing more photographers (pro and otherwise) to take more vertical aspect photos, since that's the native orientation in Snapchat.

I'm 22 so of course I have Snapchat, but it has no bearing at all on the manner in which I take photos (mostly landscapes). I mean I get the power of social media but this just doesn't make sense to me. What do you guys think?

Not sure if this thread was posted elsewhere, but I'll bite. In the context of the article, I don't think I take vertical pictures any more or less than I normally would. But the way I shoot has changed in that I think much more about my audience and which images I choose to show (or not show) on sites like Instagram.

Hmm..this article definitely poses an interesting question. I'm not sure how much I buy Snapchat and Instagram impacting seasoned photographers, but it might be playing a role in shifting future aesthetics.

I do take a lot of vertical images....so it's hard to say. Probably, but it's likely that I don't even realize most of the ways it effects the way that I see.

As most of my photo's are of my daughter, social media has no influence on them at all.

Excellent article. I think we're all effected by the impact of social media in one way or another, but I wasn't aware of the recent changes in taking vertical images - although it absolutely makes perfect sense.
