WIth this hobby it's very easy to get caught up in gear thing. In fact, it's a known disease called GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome. (It applies to fly fishing, too. Trust me!)

My advice, is to get a good DSLR body (Canon, Pentax, Nikon, etc) that's used and in excellent-mint condition. There is plenty of gear sold through eBay, online camera clubs, and retailers who deal in used gear. My first camera, a Canon Rebel t3i can be bought for less than $150. Some kit lenses to screw on to the bodybatteries and a charger, and you're in business. My old Rebel takes fantastic photos.

Don't spend a ton of money of gear that is too new or too complex to operate.
