I think the 85mm f1.4 would be a sweet lens to have!

I would go with either a 50mm or 85mm for portrait. Both are f1.8 or greater which will help in the low light

I usually shoot with a 1.5-2x 'normal' lens. So on a full-frame(think 35mm format) I'd go with my 85mm. On a DX format, I use my 50mm. The longer focal lenghth tends to be kinder to my clients who are non-pro models (all of them). It flattens facial features slightly, and has a shallower DOF. All good things.

I use the 85 f/1.4 and the 70-200 f/2.8. These are great for portraits and love the shallow depth of field when shooting at f/2 or f/4.

85mm 1.4, 24-70 2.8mm (but on 70mm mostly) and 70-200mm 2.8 are my choices on a D300.
