Err, soft "filter" or soft "lens"? There are lots of special effects filters for a diffusion / cheescloth / fog look. Just try the Cokin catalog. I have the DUTO diffusion filter by Calumet. But its strength turns out to be very, very mild, compared to the Cokin filters.

That's a new one on me soft lens. Never heard of it. I have heard of people creating a soft look, which would be done in post processing.

I just got the DUTO filter. Plan to make some test shots, but have not gotten around to that yet. Have played with it enough to know that the strength of the softening depends on the f/-stop. Strongest when stopped way down, almost no effect when the aperture is wide open. Once I have run those tests, I will put them up on my Zenfolio site. But that will likely be a few weeks from now.

Dedicated portrait lenses were more common back in the days of film. Filters for softness have been around for a long, long time. These were pioneered by Hollywood for glamour shots of movie stars. At one time they were even considered a Hollywood "secret". Such filters come in a wide range of types, with different effects. These days "artistic" filters, and plain old blur tools, make this much easier in processing. But I still get a kick out of playing around with the old lens filters. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it.

I have now put up a gallery of shots comparing different "soft" filters, including one Nikon filter -

I have a "Nikon Soft 1" filter and will keep it as long as I keep a film body, but for digital....I love using the diffusion filter in my Topaz Labs Software bundle because of the ability to vary the degree of softness. :)

If you do buy a Soft filter, remember to manual focus only or you will be unhappy with the results.

It is what it is.

Why would you want a soft filter these days?

True, but you don't get as nice of effect as you would with a on camera filter
