50mm prime vs 35mm prime on Nikon D70?

I currently have a 50mm f/1.4 and really love this lens. I'm thinking about picking up a 35mm f/1.8 and was double guessing myself on what I would be using this lens for. Granted on a crop sensor camera I'm going to be closer to a true 50mm correct?

Those with a 35mm prime, what are you using it for? Portraits?

Yes, a 35mm will put you closer to 50mm on a cropped sensor and it will be a little wider. But, since you already use the 50mm 1.4, I personally wouldn't pick up the 35 1.8. I just don't know if the benifits would out weigh the cost.

You don't mention why you're thinking of the 35. What is the fifty not doing you believe the 35 will?

Why so serious?

Personally I can't imagine having a camera without a fast "normal" prime. If my math is right, 35x1.5=52.5 so the 35 will be pretty close.

Of course you can use it for portraits. The portraits will IMO seem more intimate because you will be closer to the subject. Their features will be less flat.

It is also a great focal length for general purpose photography. And carrying a prime vs a zoom (IMO) encourages good habits like moving around to get a different point of view. If you don't like the composition you can't just turn a dial, you must move the camera. Of course the downside is sometimes you can't move around enough.

I would encourage everyone who has a crop sensor DSLR to own a fast prime in the 30-35 range. But maybe I'm biased cause when I got into photography the slr with a 50 was the standard kit that everyone started with.
