nikon 105mm f2.8D micro lens and Full / Limit settings

12 years 2 months ago #201056 by hanser
I am using Nikon D200 with Nikon 105mm f2.8D lens. I see a Full / Limit setting on the side of the lens. Whats the best use of this when taking head & shoulder portraits or head shots?
thanks for any help,
hanser

For example, on my 105mm macro lens, if I know that I'm only going to be trying to focus on something a couple of inches away, then I could set it on "limit", and it would only go through the "near" range as it tries to focus on something that maybe doesn't have quite enough light on it or has too little contrast in order for the autofocus to work efficiently. It just keeps you from having to wait for the lens to go through it's full range before getting back to where it needs to be searching for its focus. Just be sure that the last thing that you had it focus on was, indeed, up close. Vice versa if you're trying to focus on something a few feet away.

Why so serious?

I'm not really sure why you would use a macro lens to take portraits. Yes you can, but not sure why someone would want too. You be better off shooting with a 85mm for portraits. But for portraits keep the lens on full settings.

Because it's one of the sharpest lenses Nikon makes and is a good length for portraits. The 85 is ideal, but the 105 is nothing to sneeze at.

:agree: I have used both, and both are excellent. When weight and space are issues, it allows me to leave the 85mmf/1.4 at home.

I also agree the 105 is one of the finest lenses for all around shooting. While I dont have on I rented one and loved it.
