Why is the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 double the cost of the 105mm f/2.8

I get that there is a f-stop difference, but you also get 20mm more focal length with the 105mm over the 85. So why is the 85mm nearly double the cost of the 105mm?

The 20mm focal length increase is inconsequential.,,The difference in the F stop is what drives the price differential. More costly design & higher manufacturing costs go hand in hand with faster F stops

Have you looked at the two lenses side by side?

Big difference in price if you ask me. Thanks for clarifying

Yeah faster f-stop has always meant bend over when purchasing. But with the newer cameras that f-stop difference is not as it was for low light work. Where the faster f-stop trounces the slower is in depth of field.

BTW the 85 1.8G is awesome and just as good as the 85 1.4 in IQ. It's just a tad slower and not made of metal etc.

Very good lens indeed.

There are also internal lens design issues that change as you go faster for a given focal length in order to maintain image quality across the field of view for all f stops. This often results in special types of glass, and extra correcting elements being added to go along with the increase in diameter.
