The Nikon Announces Its Fifth DSLR for the Year – But When Will It Be Available in the US?

Last week, we speculated on Nikon's announcement of its fifth DSLR for the year, and today we can confirm that the mid-range D5200 is indeed on its way! Packed with a 24.1 megapixel higher resolution CMOS sensor, newer EXPEED 3 processor, 5 frames per second continuous shooting mode, and ISO range of 100-6400 (expandable to 25600), the DX-format D5200 is a huge step up from its D5100 and D5000 predecessors. Physically, the D5200 borrows much from the body of the D5100, retaining the 3-inch pop-out LCD swivel screen. It also paves the way towards bridging the gap to its higher-end cousins the D7000 and D600 by featuring the same 39-point autofocus (AF) and metering systems, and including a high resolution that tops the 16.2 megapixel D7000 and is nearly the same as the D600 (do we smell a replacement for the D7000 on the way?). However, the D5200 it is still missing features such as weather sealing, and a dual SD-card slots. These missing features along with the fact that the D5200 will be available in multiple colors (red, bronze, or black) suggests that this camera is still intended to suit the needs of entry-level amateur photographers.

The D5200's predecessor, the D5100 , was first revealed in April 2011, so the timeline plus the D5100's recent price cuts have been indicators that an update was on the horizon. When comparing the D5200 and D5100, there is evident improvement in body size (505 grams versus 560), resolution (24.1 megapixels versus 16.2), and continuous shooting speed (5 fps versus 4). These improvements, plus the speculation that the D5200 won't cost much more than the 5100, give hobby photographers more than enough reason to upgrade to the newer model. Curious about the new model's image quality? Check out the sample images recently posted by Nikon!

Interestingly, the D5200 has only been officially announced overseas so far, and it is currently unknown when it will be available in the United States, although Nikon Rumors suggests the D5200 will not be unveiled to the US until January 2013 at CES. The D5200 with an 18-55 kit lens is currently available for pre-order in the EU for a price of £819.99.

How about it, Nikonians? Are you ready to get your hands on the D5200?

I really thought the D400 would be the next to be released from Nikon. Well you never know there is still time before the end of the year.
