Would you buy a Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 ED-IF AF-S VR II?

This lens is around $1046 with USA warranty. Is there any other lenses with this focal range that has larger aperture? Like f/2.8 or full f/3.5?

Guess it depends on what you want to do. I have a 28-200 lens and for a walk around lens it was fine. But when I got my D5000 I got just the body and bought the 18-105 separately. 18mm was a good improvement over 28mm. Then I got to what I was doing I needed something longer so I went with the 55-300 and don't regret it one bit. I use it to shoot dogs coming at me from 25-30 yds away. A bit under 300 works fine when the dogs start and 55 works fine when they get closer. I thought about the 70-300 which I have but felt 70 wasn't wide enough. An 18mm on my camera comes to about 28mm and 28 come's out about 42mm. 55 and 70 don't really come out there either. Add 1.5 with my D5000 and my D70. Something about the 55-300 that might be the same about the 280-300 is the lens is a bit big for walking around a lot, the 18-105 is much better and never left me short.

I use to own one. It's a really sharp lens actually. Amazing sharp for the zoom range.

I'd recommend it if you want a travel lens, especially if you have an FX body. I know someone who use to shoot professional NBA. He loves it, basically the only lens he uses.
