Nikon may be discontinuing its 16mm fisheye – will you miss it?

Is Nikon's 16mm f/2.8 fisheye lens about to be discontinued? According to Nikon Rumors , it looks to be so. Although the official Nikon website has no news to report, two camera stores in Romania are listing the lens as “end of life.” Since the stores were previously among the first to report past Nikon products as discontinued (e.g. the Nikon D3x and D3s), we're pretty sure that official word will come out soon.

First introduced in 1993, the Nikon 16mm f/2.8 fisheye lens noted is for its high performing Close-Range Correction (CRC) system that fills a full frame (FX) camera with a 180 degree angular view, or 107 degree view on a crop sensor (DX) camera. Unlike the older, circular fisheyes, this 16mm offers a slightly less distorted and more usable image. However, this lens is still used primarily among photographers aiming to get unnatural, special effect images. The 16mm f/2.8 fisheye is still available for purchase at a price of $899.95.

For fisheye lens aficionados, fear not; the Nikon 10.5mm appears to be in no danger of discontinuation. Nikon's other fisheye lens give the same image results on DX cameras that the 16mm fisheye produces on FX cameras, so if you have a cropped sensor camera, the 10.5mm is the fisheye for you anyway. This lens is the widest fisheye available for Nikon, and it tops the range of Canon's 15mm f/2.8 fisheye. Canon also doesn't have any fisheye lenses for any of its smaller, non-EOS DSLRs such as the Rebels, 30D, 20D, or 1D.

What's your take on fisheye lenses? Will you miss the Nikon 16mm fisheye if it really does become discontinued?

Discontinue? That doesn't mean elimination. There will be plenty of units, probably new and surely used available for many years to come..... :)

Why so serious?
