Coming up: a 'beautiful horror movie' shot entirely on a Nikon D800!

While many filmmakers have gravitated toward Canon's EOD 5D series, Nikon is making a serious play at the film industry with its new D800 HD-SLR . Earlier this year, Nikon united two of the world's top filmmakers, writer/director Guillermo Arriaga (known for authoring films such as Amores Perros and Babel) and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski (of Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, and Minority Report fame), and challenged them to create a short horror film using only the Nikon D800. Entitled “Broken Night,” the film will be released to the public early next month, but a trailer is already available on its website . The quick 48-second trailer offers no glimpse into the movie's storyline, but focuses on the film's intent to show off the HD video prowess of the D800. Says the film's trailer: “The Nikon D800 produced video so extraordinarily cinematic it can find beauty anywhere, even in a nightmare.” Color us curious!

Nikon released its highly anticipated D800 SLR camera earlier this year. The 36.3-megapixel full frame format camera includes full 1080p HD video capabilities, a feature noteably missing on Nikon's now discontinued D700. Nikon's higher end flagship model, the recently released D4 , also comes packed with the ability to record 1080p video at 30 frames per second, but at a noteably higher cost than the D800 or Canon's EOS 5D Mark III , which also has 1080p HD video.

What do you think about Nikon DSLRs adding HD video functionality? Are these features you want to see on Nikon cameras, or are they better off enhancing photography features?

They're doing both well, and that's fine with me. I think the camera makers are actually doing a great job, resolution, AF, low light abilities have really improved the last few years. I don't use video now, but maybe will in the future..... ;)

Why so serious?
