Older Nikon 50mm f/1.4D version vs newer G version?

The f/1.4D version is nearly $150 less than the newer G version. Can you help me with the pro's and con's of having each? From a sharpness standpoint would they be equally the same? Does having the G's autofocus really make all the difference?

I have the AF Nikkor 50mm 1.4 (pre-d, rubber grip)...same optics as the "D" lens. I love it, very underrated lens. I have given a lot of thought to upgrading to a "D" or a "G" model simply to gain access to the distance chip for I-TTL flash photography, but that is the only reason for me to upgrade.

I might add that the AFs Nikkor 50mm 1.8G is looking really good right now and might be a valid third option for professional results. I'm thinking that this lens might be worth giving up 2/3 of a stop, especially if the budget is a factor.

It is what it is.

The "G" version has 8 elements in 7 groups, where all of the older versions had 7 elements in 6 groups...Is it worth it to get the newest model? That is a question only you can decide. As for optical performance, I doubt you would be able to discern it. Build quality?...More polycarbonate to make it lighter, but more electronics to possibly act up or be damaged in drops & bumps. No aperture ring. It is an AFS lens, but I doubt you would notice much of a difference between it & an older lens, especially on pro level models (strong built AF motors) more so on prosumer bodies (weaker AF motors in the body)...

I have the newer G version and although I've never used the D version, I would stick with the newer one. I really like this lens.

I own the 50f/1.4G and the 50f/1.8. Both fantastic lenses. The newer G is a fast focus and sharp, but the older 1.8 is certainly no slouch. Most of the time you wouldn't be able to tell the difference by the results, only the price.... :)

Why so serious?
