Just How Bad is Nikon D600 Dust Sensor Problem?

Ever since the Nikon D600's debut, there's been some buzz from photographers reporting of a possible internal dust accumulation problem. LensRental blogged about it in October, noting that many technicians were complaining of rented D600 returning back with lots of dust despite being freshly cleaned (and in some cases brand new) when departing. Said LensRental, “In general, about 1 out of 4 cameras requires sensor cleaning after a rental. All 20 of the D600s did.” Upon further examination, they declared that the D600's shutter opening left a hint of a gap around the shutter curtain, likely attributing to the dust problem.

Now making its rounds around the Internet and photography sites is a time lapse video proving that the dust spots on the D600 sensor are indeed real. Artist Kyle Clements took a brand new D600 and attached a 50mm f/1.8 to it and ran a test, firing a total of 1,000 shots in front of a white piece of paper. The results are visually astounding, showing a vast accumulation of dust in the D600's upper left corner of the sensor, as well as what appears to be oil or grease stains in the corners. Clements reminds viewers that all of this build up occurred without a lens change, so the dust appears to be internal. No official word from Nikon addressing this issue, but it should be noted that the D800 also had some dust sensor problems that were fixed in later models.

I read where Nikon addressed the problem, and it seems it has been corrected. The early models were affected, which means there should be a few refurb. deals for a while..... :cheer:

Why so serious?
